ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress

Yesterday when i tried to login into my application , i could not login into my account . I was unable to login with the following error. But datbase was in open state.

ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress

Actually , while trying to find out the problem , the archive log was full and removed some of the archived log file to create the space Now another problem came i.e. oracale initalization or shutdown in progress.

Solution 1:

if you have a backup of the database + archive logs: restore and recover

without backup, the tablespace became useless: drop it while in mount mode, then open the database

i.e.

sqlplus /nolog
SQL> connect / as sysdba
SQL> shutdown abort
SQL> startup nomount
SQL> alter database mount;
SQL> alter database open;

Sometime the above syntax dont work resulting the following error

ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kcratr1_lostwrt]

Under this situation follow the following steps:

SQL> startup mount

ORACLE Instance started

SQL> recover database

Media recovery complete

SQL> alter database open

Database altered

      Your database is alerady in open state may be it is nomount or mount state so alter the database to open state as
      login as : sqlplus / as sysdba
      SQL>alter database open;
      SQL> shutdown immediate
      or see this link

      OR
      sqlplus /nolog
      SQL> connect / as sysdba
      SQL> shutdown abort
      SQL> startup nomount
      SQL> alter database mount;
      SQL> alter database open;

    Hi,

    I am newbie here and using oracle 10 in window 7.
    I used every step properly as you given above in command prompt then its work right, but whenever we use try to login username/password on the SQL*PLUS editor then again throw error “ora-01033 oracle initialization or shutdown in progress”

    Please give me answer that how to resolve it.

    • oracle

      first shutdown the database and then again restart the database
      SQL> Shutdown abort
      SQL>startup open ;
      OR SQL> alter database open;

      Since your database is has already in open state , may be it is in nomount or mount state.

      Thank you
